/> A wine tasted at the Moueix offices down on the Libourne quayside, and made by the Vayron family, with the young Frédérique Vayron increasingly in charge, working with her parents. The estate is fairly low down the Pomerol slope. It has a very scented nose, with perfumed black cherry, nuanced with the lifted aromatics of wild herbs, and a powdery, dusty, vanilla freshness. The texture is very elegant, precise, with tightly wrapped medium-bodied texture, very correct in style, with quite incisive acidity, and a gentle bed of soft tannins in the background. It has a little length to it as well. Overall this is a charming style, of good quality.
This has a very fresh nose, of black raspberry and blackcurrant, quite sweet, with a very fine, pointed detailing to it, and a little leafy-fresh note as well. The palate feels nicely textured, lightly creamed, showing lovely freshness and purity of fruit, with a little summer fruit-creamsuggestion, underpinned by some warm and moderately grained tannins. A very pretty wine, supple and approachable, with an appropriate extraction of slightly firm tannins. This hints at the difficulties of the vintage, but I suspect it will make very pretty drinking over the next ten years. Tasted twice.
Bourgneuf has been on a roll for a number of vintages. The 2020 is another terrific showing from the Vayron family. A spine of fine tannins gives the 2020 its drive and overall sense of proportion. Black cherry, grilled herbs, menthol, licorice, chocolate and spice all open in the glass. The 2020 is a serious, rather somber Bourgneuf that is going to need at least a few years to be at its best. Tasted two times.
Antonio Galloni – Vinous – June 2021

94 – 95
The 2020 Bourgneuf is a Pomerol château that has stepped up another level in recent vintages, and this latest release continues that trend. It has a quintessential Pomerol nose of black-truffle-infused black fruit, hints of orange blossom and light tertiary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. A well-structured Bourgneuf, yet with plenty of freshness and maybe the most precise finish that I have encountered from this estate. Chapeau to winemaker Frédérique Vayron; this is outstanding. Tasted twice with consistent notes.
A property fairly well down the Pomerol slope, but which experience tells me has been doing good things during the past decade. Dark and dusty, the nose has a sense of conviction, marrying lightly mentholated black summer fruits, notably blackcurrant and blackberry, complicated by threads of violets, chamomile and liquor ice, with a finely polished base of tobacco-pouch oak. The palate maintains a medium-bodied poise, but carries fresh scents of perfumed black fruits, intertwined with the rather scented oak hinted at aromatically. There is a little touch of minerality here too, and the tannins are polished and very finely grained, giving it a fresh and convincing build, with good energy and grip in the finish, the oak and tannin lingering long here. This remains an under-rated and under-the-radar property which provides good quality drinking at a fair price (or at least it was the last time I bought some). Well done.
The 2022 Bourgneuf is a wine that I tasted three times in Bordeaux, and none of them really set my pulse racing. However, a sample tasted after my return to London seems much more promising. The nose here is backward and demands time to open in the glass, almost reluctantly offering blackberries, blueberry and crushed iris flower scents. It is certainly not extravagant. The palate is much more intense and delineated than the samples tasted in Bordeaux, ironically fresher with a slightly granular texture, a silver bead of acidity, commendable sapidity and length. This correlates far more with what I would have expected from a Pomerol that has progressed so much in recent years.
Neal Martin – Vinous – April 2023

93+
Flowers, black cherries, truffles, and a hint of cocoa fill the perfume. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, bright, fruity, and forward, with a core of fresh, cherries, and plums that finish with a bit of spice, chocolate, and espresso on the backend. The wine blends 90% Merlot, with 10% Cabernet Franc. Picking took place September 23 – October 3.
